Me Pa died in childbirth. Not everybody can say that can they? Old Dooley told me the story, he said Pa thought Mama was rootin' around with some other feller and stormed the birthing room set to end her and me both. They had to put him down to stop him. Everybody remembers me Pa but nobody seemed to like him much.

So I lived and Pa didn't. Mama took up with a string of fellers after Pa, but none of them could keep her. Too much life left to live she would say. It was a matter of time before one of them got his blood up and ended her. Brundi Ironhand was the one that finally got the best of her. They found her in the lime pits. Dwarves might tolerate a killin between menfolk, but the blood debt of killing a female? The Ironhand line was ended for that crime. A dozen families ruined, menfolk and kinder left destitute to pay back the wrong done to me. Wouldn't have been long before one of the Ironhands set to me, that's why Old Dooley sent me north. Looking back, even as wrong as I got it was still the right thing to do.

North is a big place. I was supposed to go to the Blue Hills and stay with my cousins, the Braunbairds. Old Dooley wanted me in the clergy but he always had a blind eye to the way people react when I open my mouth.
