The flow of years is counted with the seasons, marked with the passing of winters. The Imperial Calendar (Human Reckoning) breaks this up into three seasons of four months each (Spring, Autumn, and Winter), while the elven reckoning only counts Summering and Wintering. Some argue that the breaking of these two seasons into Summer's Waxing, Summer's Waning, Winter Waxing, and Winter Waning but the elven aversion to rigid form dismisses this and often treats Summer's Waning and Winter's Waxing as the same thing and they go so far as to refuse to record the season of a day until it has passed, making elven calendars useless for any kind of prediction and intensely frustrating to even the most studious historians. Thus farmers and sailors tend to rely exclusively on the Imperial Calendar.

Months are governed by the cycle of the Greater Moon, giving a consistent 30 day month. Weeks are roughly bound to the winking of the lesser moon but despite the fact that its cycle has drifted out to nearly nine days the calendar remains set at seven day weeks.
