This ring is clearly of Drow make, a lattice of metal webs to make the band set with a bloated spider instead of a stone. The ring gives +2 to directed spell saves and if the wearer succeeds by 5 or more points, the spell is reflected back on the caster. The caster makes the save at his own DC+2 and has disadvantage the first time it happens.
It is likely that the Duergar believed the ring to be cursed because it only works when successful, and is still prone to Dwarven Anti-magic.
